Artifact Weapons were announced as part of World of Warcraft: Legion at Gamescom 2015 as part of the general expansion reveal. Much more detail (more for some specific weapons) was revealed at BlizzCon 2015. Artifact weapons will also be paired with artifact relics.

If players do not prefer the aesthetic offered by their particular specialization's weapon, they can transmogrify their weapon; however, they may not transmog their normal weapon into the artifact weapon.

Once players reach max level for the expansion (110), they will have the opportunity to upgrade their weapon. This involves outdoor and dungeon content in conjunction with various factions. This will result in the addition of another relic slot and another model. Additional quests and varied content will provide additional models over time.

Obtaining one of these artifacts begins with an epic quest at the start of the expansion upon the Broken Shore (Broken Isles) or when a character hits approx. level 98 and is offered the Battle on the Broken Shore scenario. Note: The third Artifact relic slot only unlocks after the Order Hall campaign has been completed.

NPC reactions

Whispers
