Azerite is a resource (treated as a currency) that will allow players to empower specific equipment (TBD; but rare or better in Alpha) when fed to the [Heart of Azeroth] artifact. It is the blood of the titan soul of Azeroth, brought forth due to the sword of Sargeras being plunged into the world.
Azerite is incredibly powerful but with unknown potential; it can be very destructive. Gnomes and goblins provide maps that pinpoint locations on islands that players can travel to. Azerite is highly defended, as creatures are inexplicably drawn to it.
Azerite is used in conjunction with the [Heart of Azeroth] artifact to empower and set traits on other equipment. In general, collecting Azerite will directly lead to increased Artifact Power for your [Heart of Azeroth] (and only that artifact) which will unlock abilities on Azerite armor.

Azerite armor has a special icon frame, is always at least Rare quality, and typically start at ilvl 280. It is generally limited to head, shoulder, and chest slots. It will have 2 to 3 unlock-able Azerite ability choices and a 3rd or 4th choice that just increases ilvl.
Azerite abilities will unlock as your [Heart of Azeroth] levels up.
