Bandwidth is a general networking term often used in conjunction with latency that roughly describes the amount of data per second (usually seen as Mbps or megabits per second) available over an internet connection. World of Warcraft usually has a minimum bandwidth where it will be playable at all and increasing requirements depending on the style of play.

In March 2011, Canadian ISP, Rogers Communications, admitted it used traffic shaping (a euphemism for throttling) on torrent-based World of Warcraft content (largely only used for game updates). The Canadian regulatory agency, the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission), has been investigating.

Last November 2010, Virgin Media, a British ISP also had problems with traffic shaping, but users have found some workarounds.
