Character name

Character names are unique to each realm. A character name is claimed by either creating a new character or using the paid character name change service to change the character name to an unclaimed name and thus claim it. Theoretically, a name change frees up the previous name.^{[citation needed]}

Name release

Until Patch 6.2, players could not use a character name claimed by another player on the same realm. As of Patch 6.2, any characters that have not logged into the game since December 7, 2010 became available again.

Names should be released for re-use around the launch of new expansions.

Name preservation

Characters who have not logged in before the release of Patch 6.2 (June 22, 2015) will not be preserved.
