Character names are unique to each realm. A character name is claimed by either creating a new character or using the paid character name change service to change the character name to an unclaimed name and thus claim it. Theoretically, a name change frees up the previous name.[citation needed]
Name release[]
Until Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Inlinegfx/img_link_data.json' not found. Patch 6.2, players could not use a character name claimed by another player on the same realm. As of Patch 6.2, any characters that have not logged into the game since December 7, 2010 became available again.[1]
Names should be released for re-use around the launch of new expansions.[1]
Name preservation[]
Characters who have not logged in before the release of Patch 6.2 (June 22, 2015) will not be preserved.[1]
