Garad was the chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan many years before the First War. He was killed in a battle against a group of ogres and a gronn shortly before Kil'jaeden convinced the orcs to make war against the draenei.[3] He was succeeded as chieftain by his son, Durotan, who would be the only voice of dissent against the corruption of the orcish people.
It is believed that the Mag'har stronghold of Garadar, located in the sacred lands of Nagrand, is named for him. This belief is lent credence by the fact that his mate, Geyah, is the leader of the Mag'har.

In the novel, Warcraft: Durotan, Garad's death is different to that of the novel Rise of the Horde, though the Durotan novel is set within the same universe as the movie, but not the game series.
He is struck by a mysterious illness (presumably caused by Gul'dan), but he is told that Red Walker orcs are invading the area. As chieftain, he sets out to fight them despite his illness. One of the orcs challenges him to a Mak'Gora, however his illness overpowers him, and he is killed by the Red Walker orc.
