Gnomish submarine
A gnomish submarine is an Alliance unit in Warcraft II. It is a ship that is able to stealth, attack fast, and do a lot of damage but it has very low hp. There is often only a small window of weakness for the enemy against submarines. Once the enemy starts building flying machines and escorts every battleship and destroyer with a flying machine it's time to stop building submarines.
The resourceful gnomish inventors have designed an amazing craft known as the submarine. This watertight vessel can submerge beneath the waves and surreptitiously keep watch on enemy forces above the surface. The gnomish submarine is visible only to Towers, aerial forces, and other vessels that move beneath the waves. Using cunning and craft to carry out surprise attacks on more powerful enemies makes the submarine an invaluable part of the Lordaeron armada.[1]
Determined to not let the mysteries of the sea elude their curious minds, gnomish tinkers created these vessels that can travel under the waves.[2] Gnome inventors took their resourcefulness to the seas and created these amazing watertight vessels. The submarines have proved themselves to be a powerful threat to not only ships, but also coastal targets within range of the submarine’s battery of rockets.[3]
It moves at 20 miles per hour on the surface and 10 miles per hour underwater and has a crew of 2 (1 pilot and 1 gunner).[3]
Gnomish submarine torpedo launcher[]
These paired launchers are placed at both sides of the sub. Although both tubes cannot be fired at the same time, they allow for two quick shots without reloading torpedoes. The ship can hold 20 torpedoes at once.[2]
It is likely that these torpedoes are not fueled by gunpowder, rather a steam technology that the gnomes and dwarves are also familiar with.
In World of Warcraft[]
They have not yet been seen in World of Warcraft. However, a submarine of apparently goblin design (distinctly different from a goblin giant turtle battle sub) can be found at Venture Bay.

There will be two brand new subs in Cataclysm. These submarines will be used as transports. There will be one for gnomes and one for goblins. Both are about the size of the Gunships from Icecrown.[4]
