After Illidan's defeat at the Black Temple, many of his demon hunters were imprisoned by Maiev Shadowsong. When the Burning Legion started its third invasion on Azeroth, Gul'dan and Cordana Felsong sent Illidan's soul to the Twisting Nether, he contacted the remaining Illidari and named the demon hunter adventurer as their leader in his stead.
