Item Level Upgrades is a feature introduced in Patch 5.1 to upgrade the item level (along with attributes and bonuses according to Blizzard's secret formula) with [Valor Points], [Conquest Points], [Justice Points], and [Honor Points]. Upgrade state will be reflected in tooltips. Some items will not be upgradeable.

No items for gearing above level 90 were given for item level upgrade via the <Item Upgrade> NPCs with the expansion release through at least Patch 6.2.2. Items from Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'Module:Inlinegfx/img_link_data.json' not found. Pandaria are still upgradeable.

Patch 5.1[]
- Players can now use PvE and PvP currencies to directly upgrade equipment by visiting Ethereal merchants in their respective Pandaria faction capitals.
- Weapons and armor of item level 458 or higher can be improved by up to 8 item levels each.
- Rare quality PvE gear costs 750 Justice Points to upgrade once for 8 item levels, while Epic quality PvE gear costs 250 Valor Points for 4 item levels and can be upgraded 4 Times.
- Rare quality PvP gear costs 1500 Honor Points to upgrade once for 8 item levels, while Epic quality PvP gear costs 750 Conquest Points for 4 item levels and can be upgraded 4 Times.
- Be aware that items that have received item level enhancements cannot be placed into Void Storage.

In Patch 5.2[]
The ability to upgrade item levels was temporarily suspended for Patch 5.2 due to re-thinking itemization based on new raid content. It returned in Patch 5.3.[2]
In Patch 5.3[]
The return of item upgrades with the addition of PvP item upgrade capability has been confirmed for Patch 5.3.[3]
Upgrade level[]
So far the maximum number of times an item can be upgraded is twice. Items upgraded once are sometimes cof 5.4.8 the maximum number of times an item can be upgraded is four.
Upgrade NPCs[]
They will be temporarily removed in Patch 5.2 to return in Patch 5.3.[4]
As of Patch 5.1.0A, there are only 4 Voidbinder NPCs with the title <Item Upgrade>:
