This item is triggered from landing any harmful spell on a target. That includes the following spells and effects:
- Non-damaging, offensive abilities (e.g. Silence)
- Hits from item procs (e.g. Satyr's Lash's Shadow Bolt) and temporary enchants (e.g. Bloodboil Poison)
- Hits from mage armor spells (Ice Armor, Frost Armor and Molten Armor)
- Secondary effects (e.g. Frostbite, Improved Blizzard)
Hits from the shaman's weapon buffs (Frostbrand Weapon and Flametongue Weapon) cannot trigger it, however.
The effect seems to have an internal cooldown of approximately 16 seconds.
