Mayla Highmountain is the High Chieftain of the Highmountain tauren, a coalition of the Highmountain, Rivermane, Skyhorn, and Bloodtotem tauren tribes. She is a descendant of the great hero Huln Highmountain who fought in the War of the Ancients.

When the Burning Legion returned to Azeroth, Spiritwalker Ebonhorn called a meeting between the leaders of Highmountain, Jale Rivermane, Lasan Skyhorn, Torok Bloodtotem, Mayla's father Ulan Highmountain and Dargrul the Underking. When Mayla arrived, she said that Alliance and Horde were defeated on the Broken Shore. When Ebonhorn explained his vision in which they should give Hammer of Khaz'goroth to the outlanders, Dargrul grabbed the hammer and tried to escape, Drogbar attacked other chieftains and Mayla. Ulan Highmountain stood in Underking's way, Dargrul used Hammer's powers to kill the chieftain and run away.
As she knelt over her father's corpse, Mayla asked other chieftains how many they could spare to hunt down the Underking. However, they had no intention in helping saying that they are completely powerless against the Hammer. With other chieftains left, Mayla picked up her father's totem saying that if Legion is to be stopped, Highmountain must not stand divided.[1]
