They are believed to be a magically-enhanced strain of Myrmidon. It helped both Illidan and Vashj in their efforts.
Even though the Naga society is female dominated with mainly females studying magic, these creatures are by far the strongest units in the naga army (although the Naga Sea Witch doesn't get pushed around easily either), possessing both great physical strength and immense magical power. In the game (Warcraft III), they were so powerful that players considered them on an equal footing with Hero units, minus the part where (due to their unque status as customizable units) they could not be respawned or created en masse.
During A Symphony of Frost and Flame, Illidan's base possessed the ability to train Naga Royal Guards.
