Ner'zhul is the warlord of the Shadowmoon clan and the ruler of much of Shadowmoon Valley in the alternate timeline.

In the alternate world of Draenor, Ner'zhul encountered Grom Hellscream, who was leading the Iron Horde across the world. He was given an ultimatum by the Warchief: join the Iron Horde, or his clan would be destroyed. Since he had no desire for war, Ner'zhul joined the Iron Horde in order to save his people, but Grom, unsatisfied with the Shadowmoon Clan's affinity for earth and water magic, ordered Ner'zhul to provide a more worthy form of power. Thus, Ner'zhul was forced to break the ancient laws of the Shadowmoon Clan by harvesting the power of the Dark Star.
Later on, Ner'zhul led his clan as the Iron Horde defended the Dark Portal from the Alliance and Horde that came from the original timeline of Azeroth. After the Dark Portal was destroyed, Ner'zhul stood along with Grom Hellscream, Kilrogg Deadeye, Kargath Bladefist, and Blackhand on top of a cliff as Grom ordered the Iron Horde to eliminate their enemies.
While the Iron Horde continued its operation, Ner'zhul and the Shadowmoon Clan were assigned by Grom to attack the draenei at the Temple of Karabor. Since the Shadowmoon orcs lived peacefully with the Draenei, Ner'zhul and his people were forced to comply to Grom's command. As the Shadowmoon orcs prepared to attack Karabor, Ner'zhul summoned the Dark Star, but that was when an Alliance or Horde adventurer was tasked to stop him. During the ensuing confrontation, Ner'zhul refused to back down, declaring that he'd do anything to save his clan from its enslavement by the Iron Horde. That was when Velen appeared and offered his assistance to help him restore his clan to its peaceful ways. Ner'zhul refused and chose to fight Velen.
After a brief fight, Ner'zhul left when the Dark Star was complete, but Velen sacrificed himself to purify the Dark Star into its original form. Ner'zhul and his clan were removed from the Iron Horde for their failure to destroy Karabor. He fled to the Shadowmoon Burial Grounds and left the Iron Horde in Shadowmoon Valley to its fate. While hiding in the depths of the Burial Grounds, Ner'zhul rallied his best shaman and necromancers while he performed a powerful ritual. After his minions were slain, the Alliance or Horde adventurers arrived at the Edge of Reality where they encountered Ner'zhul, who was under the influence of the Void. Ner'zhul fought the adventurers, but was defeated and killed once and for all.
