Anub'arak in Azjol-Nerub

General Information[]

Anub'arak is an Eastern Time Zone PvP server and part of the Whirldwind US battlegroup. It was launched on August 21st 2006, just a few months prior to the launch of The Burning Crusade expansion.

The server is named after Anub'arak, a former king and now Crypt Lord of the lost spider kingdom of Azjol-Nerub.

Community[]

Anub'arak is a low population server with a bias in favor of the Horde. Current estimates place the Alliance to Horde ratio at approximately 1 to 4.7 overall and approximately 1 to 6.1 at level 85 (i.e. approximately 85% of the server's level 85s are Horde). Anub'arak also has a disproportionately high population of Blood Elves; according to the Warcraft Census, there are about as many blood elf paladins on Anub'arak as there are Alliance players put together.

Anub'arak has been a recurring target realm for free server transfers and has often been listed as a 'recommended' destination in ongoing attempts to remedy the low population. These efforts have yet to produce a substantial impact, particularly for the Alliance.

Many of those who play on Anub'arak have been there long enough to establish a tight-knit group of friends to play with. The community can be said to be characterized by cliques, with many players preferring to socialize within their respective group rather than the greater community. While not outright hostile to those new to the server, this may be a barrier to getting involved in the community. A large portion of the population on Anub'arak consists of alts and casual players.

PVP Activity[]

PVP activity on Anub'arak has recently gained a healthy group of Horde guilds active in both arena and rated battlegrounds. The best arena team from Anub'arak can consistently place in the top 40 on the Whirlwind arena ladder.

Economy[]

The low population may be evident in the often sparse activity in questing and farming areas, potentially making group objectives difficult to complete. Rare items, recipes, and crafting goods are in short supply.

The limited supply of items and materials considered commonplace on higher population servers may cause the economy on Anub'arak to appear inflated. The prices are considerably higher than what may be found on most servers. Many players are able to profit from the auction house by exploiting the limited supply. This is especially true with the introduction of the Mobile Auction House.

Progression[]

Due to the low population, Anub'arak has not maintained a strong presence in raiding, particularly for the Alliance. The Horde, however, has been developing a healthy raiding population since the launch of Cataclysm, with over a dozen guilds active in 4.3 content. Anub'arak is ranked 208th out of the 243 US realms in overall progression according to WoWProgress.

History[]

Vanilla[]

Anub'arak was opened on August 21st, 2006. This was one of many servers opened five months prior to the release of The Burning Crusade. Anub'arak showed promise early in its history with the Alliance guild Chilltown tearing through pre-TBC content. They completed Zul'Gurub before the Horde began to reach level 60. By the time the Horde had completed Molten Core, Chilltown had completed Blackwing Lair. Although Chilltown progressed in 40-man Naxxramas before ever setting foot in Ahn'Qiraj, the guild eventually disbanded due to lack of raid attendance.

The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj were opened by a hunter from the Horde guild Prey two weeks prior to the launch of The Burning Crusade. This would stem into a bitter cross-faction rivalry on Anub'arak.

The Burning Crusade[]

By the launch of The Burning Crusade, many Alliance had transferred elsewhere, shifting the server's raiding progression in favor of the Horde. The Horde guilds Revolving Door, Twilight, Legion de MonteCristo, Divine Comedy, Feralis, Remorseless, and We Wipe at One Percent, a Chinese transfer guild, led progression into Tier 5 and Tier 6 content, followed by the Alliance guilds Epinicion, Deadly Soap, and Skyfang.

Near the end of The Burning Crusade, many Horde raiding guilds disbanded, and the Alliance guild Deadly Soap addressed its respective stall in progression by becoming one of the premier PVP guilds on the server. Epinicion became the only guild on the Alliance to complete Serpentshrine Cavern and Tempest Keep. Skyfang joined them in The Battle for Mount Hyjal and Black Temple as soon as the entrance requirements were removed. Skyfang eventually dissolved and Epinicion transferred to Dark Iron upon stalling in progression after the Teron Gorefiend encounter.

Prior to attunement removals, Remorseless, Revolving Door, and We Wipe at One Percent were the only guilds to progress beyond Tier 5 content. While Remorseless led server firsts throughout Tier 5, We Wipe at One Percent would snatch titles in Black Temple. Revolving Door would eventually break up and move to Server:Smolderthorn US However, shortly after defeating Illidan, the hardcore Chinese guild disbanded. Months later, Remorseless would claim the server's first set of [Warglaive of Azzinoth]. Having continued into Sunwell Plateau, where they claimed the only kills on Kalecgos and Brutallus, the members of Remorseless transferred to Arthas and Gorefiend.
