The Shadowlands are a tangentially linked realm to the physical realm (that most players experience in Azeroth) that reflects opposite of the verdant Emerald Dream. The origins of the Shadowlands remain uncertain, but it's believed that they have predated the Titans themselves. Many believe that mortal souls are drawn into this dark place at the point of death, where they remain forever. Still others hope that their souls will go on to a brighter place, rather than languish for eternity within the cold confines of the Shadowlands.[1]
As the Emerald Dream is spiritual realm of life, the Shadowlands represent death, decay, and shadows.[1]
