A two-handed, edged, polearm weapon, usually in the form of a long straight pole with a sharp, narrow point similar to a straight dagger or very short sword. A spear is generally used primarily for piercing a foe at a distance and less of a slashing weapon. A skilled spearman can use a spear more like a staff to parry and attack with the blunt end.
