"It is not clear where Blizzard got the name "mantid" or the general idea for these creatures, but the game Guild Wars introduced their own extremely similar mob type called Mantid back in 2006, long before the Mists of Pandaria expansion was probably even a concept."

Stop being intentionally stupid please.

It's obvious where they got the name from: "Mantis" which is the real life name of the real life species it's based on... —This unsigned comment is by 80.202.59.110 (talkcontribs) 01:50, September 7, 2013‎. Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

It's even simpler than that: "Mantid" is already a real word! Neither Blizzard nor ArenaNet invented it. It refers to any mantis species in the genus mantidae, which includes almost every common species of mantis. So in layman's terms mantid basically means "a type of mantis". 86.162.43.206 20:13, September 8, 2013 (UTC)
Being a real word doesn't make it an obvious reason to use it in a game for humanoid mantis-like creatures. Guild Wars appeared to use the term Mantid for humanoid mantis-like creatures first in a game, so that is historically relevant. The note about mantid referring to mantis species is also relevant, but not as much. --Gengar orange 22x22Beware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 14 Sep 2013 7:33 AM Pacific
