Overview

Warlock spells are mana-based, and some spells require the use of Soul Shards.

Abilities table

Standard Abilities

These abilities are available to all Warlocks at the appropriate level, regardless of Talents.

Ability Level School Description
Demon Skin 1 Demonology Protects the caster, increasing Armor by X and restores Y health per 5 seconds. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Warlock at any time. Lasts 30 minutes.
Immolate 1 Destruction Burns the enemy for X Fire damage and then an additional Y Fire damage over 15 seconds.
Shadow Bolt 1 Destruction Sends a shadowy bolt at the enemy, causing X Shadow damage.
Summon Imp 1 Demonology Summons an Imp under the command of the Warlock.
Corruption 4 Affliction Corrupts the target, causing X Shadow damage over Y seconds.
Curse of Weakness 4 Affliction Target's attack power is reduced by X for 2 minutes. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Life Tap 6 Affliction Converts X health into X mana.
Fear 8 Affliction Strikes fear in the enemy, causing it to run in fear for up to X seconds. Damage caused may interrupt the effect. Only 1 target can be feared at a time.
Curse of Agony 8 Affliction Curses the target with agony, causing X Shadow damage over 24 seconds. This damage is dealt slowly at first, and builds up as the Curse reaches its full duration. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Create Healthstone 10 Demonology Creates a Healthstone that can be used to instantly restore X health. Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes. Requires a Soul Shard.
Drain Soul 10 Affliction Drains the soul of the target, causing X Shadow damage over 15 seconds. If the target dies while being drained, and yields experience or honor, the caster gains a Soul Shard.
Summon Voidwalker 10 Demonology Summons a Voidwalker under the command of the Warlock. Requires a Soul Shard.
Health Funnel 12 Demonology Transfers X health per second from the Warlock to their summoned pet. Lasts 10 seconds.
Curse of Recklessness 14 Affliction Curses the target with recklessness, increasing melee attack power by X but reducing Armor by Y for 2 minutes. Cursed enemies will not flee and will ignore Fear and Horror effects. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Drain Life 14 Affliction Drains X health per second and transfers it to the Warlock. Lasts 5 seconds.
Unending Breath 16 Demonology Allows the target to breathe underwater for 10 minutes.
Create Soulstone 18 Demonology Creates a Soulstone which can be used to store a target's soul. If the target dies while the soul is stored, it can resurrect itself with X health and Y mana. Lasts 30 minutes. Requires a Soul Shard.
Searing Pain 18 Destruction Inflict searing pain on the enemy target, causing X Fire damage. Causes high amount of threat.
Demon Armor 20 Demonology Increases the Armor of the Warlock by X, Shadow Resistance by Y, and restores Z health per 5 seconds. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Warlock at any time. Lasts 30 minutes.
Rain of Fire 20 Destruction Calls down an area-of-effect fire shower from the sky. Burns enemies in the area for X Fire damage over 8 seconds.
Ritual of Summoning 20 Demonology Begins a ritual that summons the targeted group member. Requires the caster and 2 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must be out of combat and right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete. Requires a Soulshard.
Summon Succubus 20 Demonology Summons a Succubus under the command of the Warlock. Requires a Soul Shard.
Eye of Kilrogg 22 Demonology Summons an Eye of Kilrogg and binds your vision to it. The eye moves quickly but is very fragile.
Drain Mana 24 Affliction Transfers X mana per second from the target to the Warlock. Lasts 5 seconds.
Sense Demons 24 Demonology Shows the location of nearby Demons on the minimap until cancelled. Only one type of tracking can be used at a time.
Curse of Tongues 26 Affliction Forces the target to speak Demonic, increasing casting times of their spells by X%. Lasts 30 seconds. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Detect Invisibility 26 Demonology Allows the friendly target to detect Lesser Invisibility. Lasts 10 minutes.
Banish 28 Demonology Banishes the target for X seconds, preventing it from doing anything, but also making it invulnerable. Works only on Elementals and Demons. Only one target can be Banished at a time.
Create Firestone 28 Demonology Creates a Firestone, which may be held in Wand slot. When equipped, enchants the main-hand weapon with a chance to cause X Fire damage each strike. In addition, equipping the Lesser Firestone increases the damage done by fire spells by Y. Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.
Enslave Demon 30 Demonology Enslaves the target demon, up to level X, forcing it to do the Warlock's bidding. While enslaved, the time between the demon's attacks is increased by 40% and its casting speed is slowed by 30%. Lasts up to 5 minutes. If you repeatedly enslave the same demon, it will become more difficult to control with each attempt.
Hellfire 30 Destruction Ignites the area around the Warlock, causing X Fire damage to the Warlock, and X Fire damage per second to surrounding enemies. Lasts 15 seconds.
Summon Felhunter 30 Demonology Summons a Felhunter under the command of the Warlock. Requires a Soul Shard.
Curse of the Elements 30 Affliction Curses the target for 5 minutes, reducing Fire and Frost resistances by X and increasing Fire and Frost damage taken by Y%. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Shadow Ward 32 Demonology Absorbs X Shadow damage. Lasts 30 seconds.
Create Spellstone 36 Demonology Creates a Spellstone, which may be held in Wand slot. When equipped and used, the Spellstone removes all harmful magic effects from the caster. There is a 3 minute use cooldown. In addition, equipping the Spellstone improves your spell critical strike rating by X. Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.
Howl of Terror 40 Affliction Howl, causing 5 enemies within 10 yards to flee in terror for X seconds. Damage caused may interrupt the effect.
Summon Felsteed 40 Demonology Summons a Felsteed, which serves as a mount for the Warlock. Speed is increased by 60%.
Death Coil 42 Affliction Causes the enemy target to run in horror for 3 seconds and causes X Shadow damage. The Warlock gains 100% of the damage caused in health.
Curse of Shadow 44 Affliction Curses the target, reducing Shadow and Arcane Resistance by X and increasing Shadow and Arcane damage taken by Y%. Lasts 120 seconds. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Soul Fire 48 Destruction Burns the enemy's soul, causing X Fire damage. Requires a Soul Shard.
Inferno 50 Demonology Summons an Infernal pet under the command of the Warlock for 5 minutes. After the initial period the demon must be re-enslaved. Requires an Infernal Stone.
Curse of Doom 60 Affliction Curses the target with Impending Doom. Causes X Shadow damage after 60 seconds. If the target dies from this damage, there is a chance of a Doomguard being summoned.
Ritual of Doom 60 Destruction Begins a ritual that sacrifices a random participant to summon a doomguard. The doomguard must be immediately enslaved or it will attack the ritual participants. Requires the Warlock and 4 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must right-click the portal and not move until the ritual is complete.
Summon Dreadsteed 60 Demonology Summons a Dreadsteed, which serves as a mount for the Warlock. Speed is increased by 100%.

Burning Crusade abilities

Ability Level School Description
Fel Armor 62 Demonology Surrounds the caster with fel energy, increasing the amount of health generated through spells and effects by 20% and increasing spell damage by up to X. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Warlock at any time. Lasts 30 min.
Incinerate 64 Destruction Deals X Fire damage to your target and an additional Y Fire damage if the target is affected by an Immolate spell.
Soulshatter 66 Demonology Reduces threat by 50% for all enemies within 50 yards.
Ritual of Souls 68 Demonology Begins a ritual that creates a Soulwell. Raid members can click the Soulwell to acquire a Master Healthstone. The Soulwell lasts for 5 min or 10 charges. Requires the caster and 2 additional party members to complete the ritual. In order to participate, all players must be out of combat and right-click the soul portal and not move until the ritual is complete.
Seed of Corruption 70 Affliction Imbeds a demon seed in the enemy target, causing 1044 Shadow damage over 18 sec. When the target takes 1044 total damage, the seed will inflict 1110 to 1290 Shadow damage to all enemies within 15 yards of the target. Only one Corruption spell per Warlock can be active on any one target.

Talent Granted Abilities

Rank 1 in these abilities is only unlocked by purchasing them from the appropriate Talent tree. Ranks 2 and beyond can then be purchased from the Warlock Trainer as normal.

Affliction

Amplify Curse Affliction 10 Affliction Increases the effect of your next Curse of Doom or Curse of Agony by 50%, or your next Curse of Exhaustion by an additional 20%. Lasts 30 sec.
Siphon Life Affliction 20 Affliction Transfers X health from the target to the caster every 3 sec. Lasts 30 sec.
Curse of Exhaustion Amplify Curse 1
Affliction 20
Affliction Reduces the target's movement speed by 30% for 12 sec. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target.
Dark Pact Affliction 30 Affliction Drains X of your pet's Mana, returning 100% to you.
Unstable Affliction Contagion 5
Affliction 40
Affliction Shadow energy slowly destroys the target, causing X damage over 18 sec. In addition, if the Unstable Affliction is dispelled it will cause Y damage to the dispeller and silence them for 5 sec.

Demonology

Fel Domination Demonology 10 Demonology Your next Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Felhunter or Felguard Summon spell has its casting time reduced by 5.5 sec and its Mana cost reduced by 50%.
Demonic Sacrifice Demonology 20 Demonology When activated, sacrifices your summoned demon to grant you an effect that lasts 30 min. The effect is canceled if any Demon is summoned.

Imp: Increases your Fire damage by 15%.

Voidwalker: Restores 2% of total health every 4 sec.

Succubus: Increases your Shadow damage by 15%.

Felhunter: Restores 3% of total mana every 4 sec.

Felguard: Increases your Shadow damage by 10% and restores 2% of total mana every 4 sec.

Demonology 30
Demonology When active, 20% of all damage taken by the caster is taken by your Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Felhunter, Felguard, or enslaved demon instead. That damage cannot be prevented. In addition, both the demon and master will inflict 5% more damage. Lasts as long as the demon is active and controlled.
Summon Felguard Demonology 40 Demonology Summons a Felguard under the command of the Warlock. Requires a Soul Shard.

Destruction

Shadowburn Destruction 10 Destruction Instantly blasts the target for X Shadow damage. If the target dies within 5 sec of Shadowburn, and yields experience or honor, the caster gains a Soul Shard. Requires a Soul Shard.
Conflagrate Improved Immolate 5
Destruction 30
Destruction Ignites a target that is already afflicted by your Immolate, dealing X Fire damage and consuming the Immolate spell.
Shadowfury Shadow and Flame 5
Destruction 40
Destruction Shadowfury is unleashed, causing X Shadow damage and stunning all enemies within 8 yds for 2 sec.

Abilities by Type

Pets

A key part to being a Warlock is successful management of your various pets, which act a lot like an additional party member with specific roles to assist you.

Beginning Warlocks can initially summon an Imp pet, which acts as an additional damage-dealer and support pet, like a Mage or a Priest.

At Level 10, Warlocks can learn to summon a Voidwalker pet, which acts as a tank like a Warrior.

At Level 20, a Succubus pet becomes available helping dealing additional melee damage and crowd control, similer to a Rogue.

At Level 30, a Warlock can learn to summon a Felhunter, an anti-caster minion which helps with countering spells, enemy buffs and debuffs, and some tanking capabilities.

Once you hit Level 40, you can choose to summon an Infernal pet, a very powerful melee pet which requires continuous enslavement to keep it under the Warlocks control.

At Level 51 or higher, it is possible to obtain a Felguard pet through the Demonology talent tree, serving as arguably a more effective tank and damage-dealer than the Voidwalker.

Finally at Level 60, the Doomguard becomes available and is the most powerful Warlock pet, but requires a lot of effort to summon and needs to be continuously enslaved.

A big part of playing a Warlock is determining which pet should be used at what times and, of course, which one suits your playing style.

Offensive abilities

Direct Damage

Warlocks can deal direct damage with Shadow Bolt, Searing Pain, Shadowburn, Soul Fire and Incinerate. Warlocks who spec heavily in the Destruction tree improve their capabilities of dealing direct damage, at the cost of mana effeciency.

Damage over Time

Warlock's are loaded with a variety of damage-over-time (DoT) spells, and should always be applied in fights where the DoT will have time to work. Warlocks who spec heavily in the Affliction tree improve their capabilities in the DoT field.

Some DoT's like Corruption and Curse of Agony deal all its damage over its duration, while others like Immolate, Seed of Corruption and Unstable Affliction deal additional direct damage. Immolate deals its damage at the start of the DoT, Seed of Corruption at the end (in an area-of-affect style), and Unstable Affliction deals damage and silences anyone who dispells it.

Additionally, Affliction-specced Warlocks also gain Siphon Life which restores damage dealt to the target as health to the Warlock.

Area-of-Effect Damage

Warlocks possess some area-of-effect (AoE) spells, both of which are channeled. They can use Rain of Fire to deliver damage over a target area, or use Hellfire to deliver damage around the Warlock itself at the cost of their own health.

In addition to this, Destruction specced Warlocks can use Shadowfury which also stuns targets, and at later levels the Seed of Corruption spell deals AoE damage if the DoT componant runs its full duration.

Defensive abilities

Crowd Control

Warlocks can manage multiple targets through a number of means. They can use their own Fear, Howl of Terror or Death Coil abilities to cause targets to run around in fear for various lengths of time, they can Banish enemy demons and elementals, and their Succubus pet can seduce enemy humanoids.

Utility abilities

Curses

Unique to Warlock's are their ability to place curse debuffs on various targets to weaken them in various ways:

Curse of Weakness - Targets with a high attack power. Curse of Agony - Targets which require an additional DoT. Curse of Recklessness - Targets with a high defense, or frequency of fleeing. Curse of Tongues - Caster targets. Curse of Exhaustion - Targets which you want to keep a distance from. Curse of the Elements - Targets weak to your fire damage, or teamed with a Mage. Curse of Shadow - Targets weak to your shadow damage, or enslave abilities. Curse of Doom - Targets which will take some time to down.

Buffs

Warlocks primarily have buffing abilities to help themselves only. Demon Skin and Demon Armor provides health regeneration and increased armor, Fel Armor improves spell damage and healing, and Shadow Ward absorbs Shadow damage directed at the Warlock.

Conjuration

Warlocks can create items and share them with other people providing support. Creating Healthstones can act as a free health potion on a seperate cooldown from your other potions, while Soulstones become a very useful means of allowing someone to resurruct after death without travelling back to their corpse.

Additionally, Warlocks can also create Firestones (which increases damage dealt by melee and fire spells) and Spellstones (which removes harmful magic effects from the Warlock and increased spell crit chance). These stones cannot be shared.

Scouting

An Eye of Kilrogg can be summoned by a Warlock providing scouting abilities.

Summoning

Warlocks have the unique ability of being able to summon any player to their current position from anywhere in the world with their Ritual of Summoning spell (unless the Warlock is inside an instance, the target needs to also be in the same instance.)
