Red, bronze, and green whelps
Plagued, blue, and black whelps
Nether, chromatic, and infinite whelps

Dragon whelps (aka dragon whelplings, dragonlings, or broodlings) are the smallest member of the dragonkin species, representing the offspring of a brood. And as a result, are easily the weakest variation of dragons. In most cases however, where there are whelps, their larger cousins are always close by.

Types of whelps[]

Dragon whelps come in a variety of colors and are found in many different locations.

As companions[]

Proto-Drake Whelp

Proto-Drake Whelp

Even smaller and weaker than dragon whelps, are dragon whelplings. These are pint-sized companion dragons that in most cases, are dropped by the dragon whelp versions of themselves.

Name Color Binding Source
[Tiny Crimson Whelpling]  Red Use Dropped by level 23–27 Crimson, Flamesnorting, and Red Whelps in the Wetlands (Now drops off L25-30 Zone Drop)
[Tiny Emerald Whelpling] Green Use Dropped by level 35–36 Noxious Whelps in the Feralas (Dreaming Whelps no longer spawn in Swamp of Sorrows)

A Dark Whelpling is a dragon whelpling battle pet, belonging to the Dragonkin family.

Source[]

Dark Whelpling drops from Scalding Whelps in the Badlands and from Searing Whelps in the Dustwallow Marsh. The Badlands is the place of choice as the Dustwallow Marsh whelps are mixed in with a lot of other mobs that don't drop the pet. On the flip side, you will probably be dealing with more competition at the Badlands on more populated servers.

Notes[]

The drop rate of this pet is 0.1% (one in every thousand kills)[1] and takes an incredible amount of patience and determination in order to get one. Due to the difficulty of obtaining one, and thus their rarity, they can sell for fairly large amounts of gold on the Auction House, at least as far as pets are concerned. The table below shows the cumulative probability of getting at least one after a number of kills.

Probability of at least one drop in X kills
Number of Kills 100 288 401 693 1386 2302 2995 4603 9206
Cumulative Probability 9.5% 25% 33% 50% 75% 90% 95% 99% 99.99%
Neither the drop rate nor cumulative probability increases based on the number of monsters you have already killed.

Orb of the Blackwhelp[]

Darkwhelp

A player in Blackwhelp Form.

In-game, players who finish part of a chain quest (Meeting Note) can purchase a single Orb of the Blackwhelp until used up of its 4 charges. These orbs allow the player to transform himself into a larger black whelp. When a player uses Noggenfogger Elixir in this form, they can do a "mini-me" with their pet Dark Whelpling. Though this form is broken through combat or even falling, players like to use this item to "mess around".

Combat dragonlings[]

Mechanical whelp

Mimicked to represent dragon whelps, engineers have developed schematics to create a mechanized version of these tiny dragons known as dragonlings. Unlike whelp companions however, dragonlings will fight for you, are only temporary, and are restricted to engineers.
